Exterior Logs |
There
are 3 general types of logs, categorized by moisture content and
the method used to shape and prepare the logs: (I) Green or wet
logs, wolmanized, timbor treated and pressure treated logs, (2)
Kiln dried or air dried logs (3) Laminated logs. The
characteristics of these logs are outlined in the following
sections.
The moisture content of logs must be reduced to 18%
(21% when using Cetol SRD) or below by observing a drying period
before applying Sikkens solvent borne coating.
If the location is one of high humidity and
warm
temperatures, Sikkens Wood Preservative (where available) or a
non-film forming clear wood preservative must be applied to the
logs before coating. Thorough cleaning and preparation of the
logs before coating is therefore essential. |

Recommended Preparation Procedures for Exterior Logs |
Spray the surface with clean water to wet the wood. To clean the
surface mix a solution of 4 ounces tri-sodium phosphate TSP), or
phosphate-free substitute, plus one quart liquid bleach in 3
quarts of water. Apply this solution to the wood via a garden
pump sprayer. Let it sit on the wood for 15-20 minutes. Power
wash the cleaning solution from the wood with clean water via a
power washer. To prevent damaging the wood do not exceed 500 psi.
The nozzle of the washer must be a maximum of I foot from the
surface for full effectiveness. Do not let the cleaning solution
dry on the wood before the final power wash rinse with clean
water. The surfaces should then be allowed to dry for 3 good
drying days before application of the coating (i.e. moisture
content is below 18%).
If blue fungi, rust from nails, discoloration,
or water marks are present this may be treated after the
cleaning process by application of a solution of 4 ounces oxalic
acid-(crystals in I gallon of warm water. This should be allowed
to sit on the affected areas for 15- 20 minutes before a final
rinse with clean water via power washer. The surfaces should
then be allowed to dry for 3 good drying days before application
of the coating (i.e. moisture content is below 18%).
During the power wash procedure, only clean
manageable areas I.e.. not too large of an area). Too large of
an area will result in problems with the cleaning solution
drying too quickly in dry, warm or windy conditions. Working on
the shaded side will reduce this problem.
Note: Fill all joints, cracks,
and nail holes with a good quality polyurethane or acrylic
filler prior to coating application. Areas where caulking is
smeared over the log surface can be sanded after drying with 80
grit sandpaper to remove the caulking residue. Caulking smears
will show up because the pigment in the Cetol finish will not
penetrate and will therefore show up lighter in color. |

Incorrect
Method
|
To avoid lap marks,
it is important to divide the substrate into parts which end on
logical breaks such as doors, windows, etc. For best results,
follow the procedures in diagram |

Correct
Method

Step#1 .Paint the
Top Section First.
Step #2 Paint Between the Windows.
Step #3. Paint the Bottom Section.
Step #4. Paint the Trim. Proper use of specific
applicators, be it brush, roller, or sprayer is necessary to
insure professional results and improved durability. |
