Design Trends - A Return to our Heritage?

Natural Choices in materials are the hottest trend in the housing industry.

Tennessee Log and Timber Homes understands this.  Our designers are in tune to this!  Our building consultants are well versed in the offerings of our company.  In the words of our President, "If it is a component of a wood home, we have anything you need or want.  Natural Elements™ are our specialty."

To quote Tina Frizzell, Director of Business Development for Tennessee Log and Timber homes, "We have found that log-home customers are harkening back to a home in the past, something that created a fingerprint in their memories."

Indeed, our log home customers have always been "in tune with Mother Nature" and some would no doubt admit to being sentimental!  Scanning back through our success stories of the past years will yield an unprecedented variety of style and uniqueness, and yes, earthiness.  Expanding our offerings to timberframe and hybrid building systems and materials is a natural fit for us.

Continuing with Tina's quote from Custom Wood Homes, "The hybrid-home customers of today want to create their own fingerprint."  Our customers tend to know what they want.  They want it "their way"!  The good news is, we want our customers to have it their way, too.  This is why we are in the design business as well as materials package business.

Allen Halcomb, of MossCreek Designs, sums it up this way:  "People who build a 'natural materials' home have fallen in love with an area and have overwhelming desire to be a part of it."  This statement parallels the sentiments of Jeffery Caudill, of Winterwoods Homes when he said, "We are seeing a rebirth of 'heritage awareness' in that customers are looking for reminders of early settlements.  Today's customers are seeking out local materials; natural, regional materials combined with vintage elements are a natural fit with our timber frame designs."

Mike & Laura Curry Share With Us

The Jackalope Lodge

Michael and Laura Curry say, "There is no reason you can't build a log home in the high desert!  We found a place we wanted to live.  We wanted to live in a log home.  We put them together and The 'Jackalope Lodge' was born!"

The Curry's began thinking about retirement and leaving the urban sprawl of Southern California behind.  A visit to Big Bear Lake stimulated their interest in log homes.  They began dreaming of building a log home.  Internet research into log homes and log home builders combined with log home show attendance led them to consider Tennessee Log Homes.  "After looking through a great many web sites we were most impressed with the TLH site and the way they did things.  We made contact with the company and were impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness we experienced from the TLH crew, especially our rep Nick Webb," Mike explained.

Mike and Laura found a nice 5 acre lot in an area of Northern Nevada.  After selling their California property, they began considering plans.  What we are sharing with you here is a modified Trenton.

High praise is given to Thayne Hammond, a third generation builder in the area (Hammond Homes, Fallon, NV).  "Thayne is an old school builder who simply is not satisfied unless it is well done and done right.  He and his crew did a fantastic job.  Everything above the basement is notched and fitted - no hangers or metal brackets.  The result is absolutely beautiful - and very impressive.  The general consensus in the area is Mr. Hammond is THE man for the job. He will go the extra mile to make it right . . . Sort of like Tennessee Log Homes." Mike said.

Impressive, indeed!  Check out the second story photos.  Mr. Hammond took it upon himself to use extra logs to make faux log ends (as if the home were full-log construction).

Tennessee Log and Timber Homes has been in business better than 35 years working with folks like Mike and Laura Curry.  It is our pleasure to receive photos of the finished homes built by our customers, each one unique.

Radiant Floor Heat

 courtesy of Warmboard Radiant Subfloor

In keeping with our ongoing quest for topnotch building technology and greener living, Tennessee Log and Timber Homes is now offering Warmboard Radiant Subflooring.

Have you considered upgrading your dream home with the superior comfort and energy efficiency of radiant floor heat?  You now have the opportunity to include genuine Warmboard Radiant Subfloor as a quality upgrade for your Tennessee Log, Timber Frame, or Natural Element Home.

Warmboard offers comfort and saves energy.   It utilizes the two most important properties for excellent thermodynamic performance and radiant heat output: high conductivity and low thermal mass. Our patented technology is unmatched in providing even, responsive, energy efficient radiant heat – right when and where you want it. This even heat coverage is also perfect for providing peace of mind with fine wood floor finishes. Warmboard gives you freedom of choice for your floor finishes, and opens up your options to include alternative water heating choices, now, or in the future.

Utilizing thick, high quality aluminum with excellent conductivity, most Warmboard systems operate with water between 90º and 110º.  Lower water temperatures mean lower energy bills for the life of your home.  Radiant floor heat is typically 20-40% more energy efficient than traditional forced air heat, and Warmboard provides the highest efficiency available.

Warmboard delivers the comfort and responsive performance that will enhance your living experience, and increase your satisfaction with your dream home. Installed using the same methods and tools as standard subfloor materials, you will accomplish two tasks at the same time, saving time and reducing labor. Warmboard also contributes to healthy and clean indoor air quality (IAQ). Germs, dust, pollen and mold spores generally associated with forced air systems do not apply to Warmboard radiant heat.

Radiant heat works well in any climate, from the extreme cold of Antarctica to the widely varying temperatures of the Northeast to the milder deserts of New Mexico and Arizona. Nearly any modern well-built home, regardless of climate, can be comfortably heated with a radiant floor heating system as its primary heat source. In fact, a Warmboard system is the primary heating system for several buildings at the U.S. Research Station in Antarctica as well as an oil worker housing complex in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.

“Floor warming” is sometimes used in small areas such as bathrooms for the sole purpose of warming your feet when you get out of the shower. This method is rarely the primary heat source of a home. “Floor heating” refers to radiant systems that are installed throughout most or all of the floor area of the home to provide whole-house heating.

At Warmboard we are dedicated to your complete satisfaction. Our Warranty provides you with quality assurance. We also provide resources to ensure the success of your individual project. You receive dedicated team support and resources that include: Design Services; Project Management; and lifetime Technical Support. Once you compare Warmboard with other solutions, we are confident that you’ll agree that Warmboard is “Simply Smarter”.

Plan of the Month

When our COO of Tennessee Log and Timber Homes, Robert Lambert,  challenged Alec Walker, AIA, to update a few of our most popular standard log plans, Alec rose to the challenge. The Tellico Retreat was born!

Alec explained, "This design deserved a great looking entrance.  The curb appeal is greatly enhanced."  Actually, this home has what we call "dual facades".  The view elevation AND the street elevation are equally attractive.  "The wrap around porch adds cubic volume, aesthetically," Alec went on.

Robert chose the Tellico for transformation because "The 'T'-shaped layout is the most popular log plan EVER."  We added the wrap around porch and the outdoor fireplace to create a design that captures the essence of what it means to embrace the great outdoors.

The curved truss work adds tremendous appeal when combined with tapered stone pillars and creative railings.
